Achieving excellence at major research universities requires outstanding faculty. Gifts that support such scholars can help attract internationally renowned professors. They also help those faculty members produce life-saving and life-changing research, bring the very best and brightest students to campus, and reach out to serve local, national and even international communities.
One of the most common ways to support university faculty is to endow their positions. Florida International University (FIU) has a variety of endowed faculty positions, including eminent scholars chairs, chairs, distinguished professorships, professorships/lectureships and fellowships.
All of these endowment options qualify for State Matching Funds.
Eminent Scholars Chairs
A named, eminent scholars chair is one of the most prestigious honors available at a university -- both to the donors that create it, and the faculty members ultimately chosen to fill the position. Only the most outstanding scholars, at the height of their careers, are considered for an eminent scholars chair. The presence of such renowned scholars attracts other prominent faculty members and the very best and brightest students. In turn, this leads to research, public service and academic programs of the highest quality, along with national and international renown.
The minimum amount to establish an eminent scholars chair at FIU is $3 million. This may pay all or a portion of the chair-holder's salary; research; equipment, publication, travel, and outreach expenses; and/or support fellowships and assistantships.
Chairs
A named chair is also a prestigious honor for the supporters that create it and the faculty members selected fill such positions. Outstanding scholars, with excellent and growing reputations are considered for such an honor. The presence of these scholars attracts other prominent faculty members and outstanding students, which greatly improves FIU's research, public service and academic programs. It also brings acclaim to FIU, and the colleges, schools or units in which the chair resides.
The minimum amount to establish a chair at FIU is $2 million. This may pay all or a portion of the chair-holder's salary; research; equipment, publication, travel, and outreach expenses; and/or support fellowships and assistantships.
Distinguished Professorships
Endowed distinguished professorships provide supplementary salary or program support for outstanding faculty members. The spendable revenue produced by the endowment may also cover research, program, outreach or other expenses related to the professor's work. A distinguished professorship may be established with a minimum gift of $1 million.
Professorships / Lectureships
Endowed professorships provide supplementary salary or program support for outstanding faculty members. The spendable revenue produced by the endowment may also cover research, program, travel, outreach or other expenses related to the professor's work. Endowed lectureships provide a source of stable funding to bring leading researchers and academicians to FIU for scholarly lectures. Professorships and lectureships may be endowed with a minimum gift of $600,000.
Fellowships
An endowed fellowship provides funding to support a graduate student or post-doctoral fellow, along with fellowship equipment, research, program, travel, space or other related expenses. These can be established with minimum gifts of $250,000.
