Community Relations Office was formed as a department in 1997 under the Division of University Relations. Protocol events, institutional events and the lecture series were brought together under this new department. Josefina Cagigal was named the founding director of the Office of Community Relations Office.
In the past the protocol events were under the auspices of the Office of the President’s under the direction of Josefina Cagigal. Commencement was an institutional event under the Division of Student Affairs and other institutional events such as Convocation were under the Division of Academic Affairs. In 1997, with the creation of the Office of Community Relations Office, all of these events were placed in this newly formed unit. In addition, the execution of the Martin Luther King Parade sponsored by the Black Employees Association (BEA) was also placed under this new department.
Today the department of Community Relations Office participates in the planning/ coordination/execution of large official Community Relations as well as official building groundbreakings, ribbon cuttings, or dedications, visits of dignitaries and institutional awards of the university. All matters of protocol also fall under this department.
